Afton is a town in Chenango County, New York. It also has within its limits a village by the same name. It is named after Afton Water, a small Scottish river mentioned by famous poet Robert Burns in his works.It was settled in 1786, and was incorporated in 1857. It has a total area of 46.5 square miles. 45.9 square miles of this area is land, and the rest is water. The town falls in the path of the Susquehanna River.

Manufacturing, agriculture and related activities, and construction are the major commercial activities here. Public schooling here comprises one elementary and one high school. The local airport is the North Fork Airport. NBT Bank, National Association is the local bank branch here. The cost of living here is 6.10% lower than the country average.
