Alexandria is a city in and the parish seat of Rapides Parish, Louisiana. It is almost the geographical center of the state, and lies on the south bank of the Red River. It is the principal city of the Alexandria metropolitan area.
Its population was estimated to be 47,723, according to an official estimate by the College of Business Population Estimates Program at Louisiana Tech University.
It has a number of festivals such as the Mardi Gras, Cenlabration and the RiverFest. The city also has notable museums, like the Alexandria Museum of Art that was founded in 1977. The building was built circa 1898 and is listed on the National Historic Register, and it opened to the public in March 1998. The Louisiana History Museum is also located downtown. Other recreational options include theater, sports, and a number of parks. The city sits in the middle of the Kisatchie National Forest.
Union Car Company has a plant near the city that offers employment. Alexandria is also home to two major hospitals: Rapides Regional, a former Baptist hospital is located downtown, and they're both in expansion mode. The historically significant Port of Alexandria has off-loading facilities for petroleum as well as non-petroleum goods.
