Allegan is a city in the state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Allegan County, and its population at the 2000 census was 4,838. The city was legally incorporated in 1907. It is considered the gateway to the Allegan State Game Area, and is surrounded by farmland.
The largest employer is the Perrigo Company, which is the largest maker of private label over-the-counter pharmaceuticals in the world. Padgham Field is the small local airport. The city has focused on resoration and revitalization of its historic heritage in recent years, including The Second Street Bridge. The city also has theater, the oldest band of community players in the state, and an arts council.
