Altona is a town in Clinton County, New York. It is part of the Plattsburgh Metro Area. It is named after a city in Germany. It has a total area of 101.3 square miles. 101.1 square miles of that area is land, and the rest is water. The area had had human settlement from 1300 CE. European settlers arrived by early nineteenth century, and the town was incorporated in 1857.

Mining, logging, and tanning were historically the major occupations. Alder Bend, Crowley Corners, Dannemora Crossing, Jericho, Irona and Miner Lake State Park are some of the communities in the town. A correctional facility is present in the village of Altona. Wholesale trade and financial operations are the economic mainstays of the town. The closest hospital is Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center, located 13 miles away in Plattsburgh.
