Asbury Park is a city in Monmouth County, New Jersey. It is located on the Jersey Shore and part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Its population at the 2010 census was 16,116. It was incorporated as a city in 1897.
It was developed as a seaside resort during the late nineteenth century. The city is known for its rich musical tradition, and especially for its association with Bruce Springsteen. From 2002 onward, Asbury Park has been experiencing a cultural, political, and economic revival, led by a booming industry of local and national artists. Large-scale renovation and revitalization efforts are on.
Musicians who have played in this city include Bruce Springsteen, Clarence Clemons, the E Street Band, Jon Bon Jovi and Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Patti Smith, Arthur Pryor, Count Basie, Gary U.S. Bonds, and many more. The Stone Pony located here is a starting point for many musicians and artists. The Bamboozle Music Festival was held in Asbury Park in the years 2003, 2004, and 2005. It will be returning to its original location for the ten year anniversary in 2012. The festival will be headlined by Blink 182, Foo Fighters, and Bon Jovi.
Parts of Asbury Park are part of an Urban Enterprise Zone . Along with other benefits to encourage employment within the Zone, shoppers can take advantage of a reduced 3½% sales tax rate.
While a number of former hotels have been demolished, some continue to exist, and some have been renovated and reopened. Operational hotels now include the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel (formerly the Berkeley-Carteret Oceanfront Hotel), The Empress Hotel, Hotel Tides, Oceanic Inn, Sixth Avenue House Bed & Breakfast Hotel and Mikell's Big House Bed & Breakfast.
