Bayou La Batre is a town in Mobile County, Alabama. It is part of the Mobile metropolitan statistical area. The city has a total area of 4.2 square miles. 4.0 square miles of the area is land, and 0.2 square miles of it (3.59%) is water. The permanent settlement here was established in 1786, and it was incorporated in 1955, and its official name is City of Bayou La Batre. The city has a total area of 4.2 square miles. 4.0 square miles of the area is land, and 0.2 square miles of it (3.59%) is water.

Bayou La Batre is essentially a fishing village, which also has the capability to process seafood. It is claimed to be the "Seafood Capital of Alabama". Seafood related trade and activities comprise the most significant player in the local economy. Another major contributor is the shipbuilding center, as well as ecotourism activities. The shipyards are owned and operated families based locally. Ships are built for clients from the U.S.A, South America and African countries. Bayou La Batre was the site of filming of Forrest Gump, as well the center where the ship for Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The village has also been features on History channel's reality documentary series Big Shrimpin'. Bayou la Batre's cost of living is 20.10% lower that the country average, making living here significantly cheaper. The village was adversely affected by Hurrican Katrina, pushing out boats on the storm surge. Education here is served by the Mobile County Public School System.
