Bennettsville is a city in and the county seat of Marlboro County, South Carolina. It is the principal city of the Bennettsville Metro Area, and also has the Bennettsville Historic District. It has a total area of 6.2 square miles. 5.6 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. The city was founded in the early nineteenth century, and named after the then governor of the state. Cotton agriculture and processing in mills led to economic growth of the area in the late nineteenth century.
Manufacturing, retail trade and to some extent agriculture are the major contributors to the local economy. Tourists also come to visit the historic district, where notable buildings include the Jennings Brown House (1826), the Female Academy (1830), the Medical Museum (1902), and the Murchison School (1902), and many more. Public schooling comprises one elementary, one primary, one middle and one high school. Private schools are also present. Marboro Park Hospital on Cheraw Highway is the local hospital. The cost of living here is 16.10% lower than the country average.
