Bennington is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Its population at the 2010 census was 1,476. The main village of the town is a Census Designated Place, and is located on the Contoocook River at the intersection of New Hampshire routes 31 and 47. The name is to commemorate the 1777 Battle of Bennington, a three-day battle fought in New York near Bennington, Vermont.
Bennington lies entirely within the Merrimack River watershed. During the mid nineteenth century, Bennington had a number of farms, along with a cutlery manufacturer, a gristmill, 2 paper mills and a sawmill. Currently, the town is home to the Monadnock Paper Mills as well as Crotched Mountain Ski & Ride, a medium sized ski resort on the Francestown line.
