What Is: Security Consultants?
Security consultants are individuals trained to analyze the security requirements -- physical, electronic, or both -- of their clients and offer them advice on the appropriate security system for their level of vulnerability and risk. For private clients, this may entail visiting the home and recommending the proper type of burglar alarm system; for small businesses such as retail establishments, it would also include solutions for vandalism and shoplifting. For larger companies and agencies, the security consultants may determine if a current security system is adequate, conduct a risk analysis to assess the likelihood of threat and the measures that should be taken to prevent any unwanted incidents, run a security training program for employees, or develop a security site plan. They may also assist in the client's compliance with industry and/or government regulatory requirements, and even offer security solutions to prevent terrorist acts. Security consultants generally have attained a bachelor's degree and must achieve professional certification before opening their own consulting businesses.
