Brief Information About Brookside

Brookside is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama. It was formerly a mining town, settled by East European immigrants. It has a total area of 6.0 square miles, all of which is land. The town was incorporated in 1898.

The mine originally located here was operated and owned by Coalburg Coal and Coke Company. It was established in 1886, and was purchased a year later by the Sloss Iron and Steel Company, to feed the blast funaces of their factories in Birmingham, Alabama. To make over the shortfall os skilled labour, a number of Czechoslovakian immigrants and their families settled close to the mines. While the factory itself shut down post the 1920 Alabama coal strike, the town still retains a distinctly East European flavor. It has a Russian Orthodox church that still holds services, and an annual "Russian Food Festival" is held here. Tourists come to the festival to sample Russian food and see traditional Slavic and Russian dances.

Brookside's cost of living is 14.20% lower than the country average, making living here comparatively cheaper. The closest hospital is the Medical West (an affiliate of the UAB health system), located about 7 miles away in Bessemer.
