'Aquariums' are usually referred to as glass enclosures wherein marine animals and plants are kept in their near natural habitat either for public display (in homes, parks, etc) or for medical observation in laboratories. Some aquariums are also made up of acrylic. Aquariums in Chattanooga come in various sizes and shapes, depending on the place and need of the owner.
In Chattanooga, generally aquariums are cubical in shape and are referred to as fish tanks. Some aquariums are also bowl-shaped, known as fish bowls. The size of aquariums is also quite varied in Chattanooga. They can range from small fish bowls with a capacity of less than one liter of water to largely held public aquariums having 1000 liters of water.
A filtration system and a lighting system is a must for every aquarium. Reckoning on the habitants of the aquarium, a cooling or heating system is also installed. The water in the aquarium should again depend on the inhabitants. Fresh water, sea water, etc, can be filled in the aquarium. The water condition is measured on the basis of salinity of the water.
Aquariums should be maintained by the aquarists, i.e. people who maintain aquariums regularly. Proper cleaning, giving proper food time to time, and maintaining the nutrient cycle inside the aquariums are all part of the maintenance.
