Fort Payne is a city in and the county seat of DeKalb County, Alabama. This was initially a Native American village. It was settled by the 1860s, and incorporated in 1889. It had an initial boom due to iron and coal deposits discovered here, which petered out. The city now claims to be the "Official Sock Capital of the World."
