The town was founded in 1857. The local businesses include a couple of resturants, grocery stores and a tax preparation company outlet. The town hosts an annual event featuring road races, car shows, and arts and crafts sales.

The town boasts of a natural conservatory featuring a natural swimming pool which has been designated a National landmark. Notable natives of the town include Tonto Coachman, the former football coach of Abilene Christian University team.

In the year 2011, Phil Campbell was devastated by a large tornado, damaging many buildings in the town.
