San Jose has one or more breweries. It is a building or a factory that produces beer. Beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage, made by fermenting saccharified starch. The starch source is usually malted barley and malted wheat. The scale of operations for breweries can vary tremendously in San Jose, as can the kind of processes, degrees of automation, and kinds of beer produced. On one hand are large scale breweries such as Bud Light and Budweiser, on the other are microbreweries and brew pubs. The latter two are also known as "craft beweries". Large scale production is usually of pale lager, which is the most widely produced American beer. Some other kinds that may be brewed include pale ale, India Pale Ale, red ale, brown ale, stout, barleywine. Beer remains a very popular drink, due to its easy fermentation process, drinkability, relatively low prices and concerted marketing. Incidentally, beer is considered by many to be the oldest fermented beverage. Evidently, the concept of having a good time is not new at all!
