Who We Are

YellowPagesDirectory.com is a Yellow Pages company working to educate consumers and promote the green movement to eliminate the unsolicited delivery of Yellow and White Pages books. This site was originally created to start a national movement to solicit the White and Yellow Pages industry to proactively stop the delivery of books and to begin moving legislation to mandate the end of this activity. At the time this movement was considered similar to the National Do-Not-Call Registry that has stopped and/or decreased the number of unwanted solicitation telephone calls to consumers.

YellowPagesDirectory.com was originally founded as YellowPagesGoesGreen.org by a college student who was renting a house in Liberty, Missouri. The number of telephone books delivered to the house was overwhelming and the work required to recycle them was daunting. When he spoke with his neighbors they all said they just threw the books away. Due to the use of technology, he felt these books were outdated. However, he understood that some people may still want them and felt the best way to limit this tremendous waste was to mimic the National Do-Not-Call Directory. Additionally, he wanted YellowPagesGoesGreen.org to serve as a depository for information and educational issues concerning the green movement. YellowPagesGoesGreen.org began collecting and delivering thousands of signatures to phone book companies and news coverage was obtained from the effort which helped the site grow virally from consumers' genuine interest and agreement with the overall mission. Thousands of sites linked to YellowPagesGoesGreen.org and the mission was featured in Yahoo Green, a green-living blog run from Yahoo!

Why We Began

YellowPagesDirectory.com was started because consumers are continually bombarded with Yellow and White Page directories at both their home and offices. The movement is not intended to stop the use of such directories, but to eliminate the unsolicited delivery of the books; if we want a book we will call and order one.

At the time, over 500 million of these directories were printed every year; that is nearly two books for every person in the country. These directories were producing a staggering amount of waste, not only in terms of misused natural resources but also in filling of valuable landfill space.

To produce 500 million books:

  • - 19 million trees were needed to be harvested
  • - 1.6 billion pounds of paper were wasted
  • - 7.2 million barrels of oil were misspent in their processing (not including wasted gas for their delivery)
  • - 268,000 cubic yards of landfill were taken up
  • - 3.2 billion kilowatts of energy were squandered

The cost associated with the delivery and disposal of these books remains exorbitant, however, print books have declined over the years. Unfortunately, unsolicited costs fall heavily on consumers. Why are we paying for something that was delivered to our homes and offices that we did not ask for?

How We Changed

After years of a combined effort between Paperless Petition and Yellow Pages Goes Green, both of which are owned and operated by Yellow Pages Directory Inc., a business registered in the State of New York, the Yellow Pages Association created their own opt-out registry; however, Paperless Petition and Yellow Pages Goes Green were the first to demand they begin respecting opt-out requests. While continuing to promote awareness and helping consumers easily opt-out of printed White and Yellow Pages delivery, today we’ve created our own simple, effective, online alternative to print.

Survey Says

According to banthephonebook.org, consumers overwhelmingly support an 'Opt-in' Program. This online survey asked participants if they would support an "opt-in" program (only receive a Yellow Pages or White Pages phone book if they requested one) and if they believe it would have a positive impact on the environment and save taxpayers millions of dollars each year, 81% of survey respondents said 'Yes'. In our our own polls users are asked which version of the Yellow Pages they use most? 64% percent of users choose "Online" Yellow Pages.

Our simple, effective, online alternative YellowPagesDirectory.com contains roughly 27.5 million Yellow Page business listings while including 250 million White Page listings. There is simply no further reason to litter our planet with paper telephone directories and Yellow Pages Goes Green will continue our mission to advocate until print books are universally accepted as obsolete.
