Aiken is a city in and the county seat of Aiken County, South Carolina. It is part of the Augusta-Richmond County Metro Area, and along with Augusta, Georgia, the major cities of the Central Savannah River Area. It has a total area of 16.2 square miles, all of which is land. It is named for William Aiken, a railroad founder. It is incorporated in late 1835. During the eighteenth century, it was a favored retiring spot for the wealthy.
Manufacturing, educational services, accommodation and food services, professional, scientific, and technical services are the major commercial activities here. There are a number of public and private schools in the area. Options for higher education include University of South Carolina at Aiken, Aiken Technical College and Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL). The South side is the main shopping area in the city now. Other attractions include events such as the Imperial Cup, the Holiday Cup, Western Carolina State Fair, Battle of Aiken Reenactment, The Whiskey Road Race and many more. Aiken Municipal Airport is the local airport. Aiken Regional Medical Center is located on University Parkway. The cost of living here is 2.80% lower than the country average.
