Brief Information About Albany

Albany is a city in and the county seat of Linn County, Oregon. It is the eleventh largest city in the state, and is a part of the Albany-Lebanon Metro Area. It has a total area of 16.1 square miles. 15.9 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. The city falls in the Willamette Valley, which is the most populated area in the state. Albany is located at the confluence of the Calapooia River and the Willamette River.

Prior to immigrant settlers, the area was a Native American settlement, specifically the Kalapuya, a Penutian-speaking people. The first European settler, a farmer named Abner Hackleman, came here in 1845. A Post Office was built here in 1850, and the city was designated as the county seat in 1851. The city was incorporated in 1864.

Albany bills itself as the "rare metals capital of the world". It produces zirconium, hafnium and titanium. Also known as the “Grass Seed Capital of the World”, the city and its surrounding areas produces grass seed, corn, beans, mint, strawberries, and hazelnuts. Wah Chang Corporation has a plant that works on zirconium production. Apart from that, retail trade, health care and social assistance, and manufacturing are the major economic activities here. Leading employers here include the Oregon Freeze Dry, and The Albany Research Center.

The city hosts a number of festivals, such as the Northwest Art and Air Festival, River Rhythms, Mondays at Monteith, Veteran's Day Parade, Albany Nosh Tour, Albany Wine Walk, Willamette River Festival and a few more. The downtown area is a historic district. Recreational options include the Senior Center, the Periwinkle Creek Bike Path, and the other 8 trails that are within Albany, along with 30 other local parks. Public education is offered by the Greater Albany Public School District. Higher education is offered by Linn-Benton Community College. Albany Municipal Airport is the local public use airport. Healthcare is provided by the Samaritan Albany General Hospital, operational since 1924.
