Albemarle is a city in and the county seat of Stanly County, North Carolina. It is part of the Albemarle Metro Area. The site has been used for human settlement for atleast the past 10,000 years. European setters primarily came in the eighteenth century. It was incorporated as a city in 1857. It has a total area of 15.8 square miles. 15.7 miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. Rolling, eroded hills, deciduous forests, and fast-running, narrow, shallow streams are the major geographical features of the region.
Historically, agriculture, regional trade and finally cotton mills were the economic mainstays of the region. The railroad connections facilitated movement of goods. Now, manufacturing, retail trade and construction are the main economic activities. There are a number of public elementary schools, as well as one middle school and one high school. Stanly Community College is the local community college. The closest hospital is the local Stanly Regional Medical Center, located on Yadkin Street. Stanly County Airport is the local airport. The cost of living here is 8.20% lower than the country average.
For recreational purposes, the city has five parks. Restoration of the historically important structures in the city is also underway. To the east of the city is the Morrow Mountain State Park. It has one local newspaper, the the Stanly News and Press. There are also two local radio stations.
The town gets 47 inches of rain annually. The number of days with measurable precipitation annually is 101. Snowfall is about 4 inches per year.
