Brief Information About Altmar

Altmar is a village in Oswego County, New York. It is within the Town of Albion, and that falls in the Syracuse Metro Area. The town government (for Albion) is based in Altmar. It was settled in 1813, and incorporated in 1876. Then, it was known as "Sand Bank". It has a total area of 2.2 square miles, most of which is land.

Salmon River Fish Hatchery is the major employer here. This hatchery stocks both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Not only that, the hatchery attracts tourists to watch the process of egg collection of fishes such as steelhead, coho salmon and chinook salmon. Public schooling comprises one elementary school.  The closest hospital is Oswego Hospital, located 25 miles away in Oswego. The cost of living here is 17.10% lower than the country average. Plans are on to dissolve the village by 2013.
