Alton is a city on the Mississippi River in Madison County, Illinois. Its population at the 2010 census was 27,865. It is a part of the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area in Southern Illinois.
Alton is famous for a number of reasons, notably its limestone bluffs along the river north of the city, for its role preceding and during the American Civil War, and as the hometown of Robert Wadlow, the tallest man known. It is also known as the "most haunted city in America" for its claimed haunted spots that are popular about paranormal enthusiasts.
From a past of heavy manufacturing and industry, Alton has now transitioned into a popular tourist and antique destination, building on heritage tourism. Popular activies include shopping, golfing, biking, gambling and touring historic sites.
It also has an art center, theater groups, a newspaper and a radio station.
