Ames is a city located in the central part of the state of Iowa in Story County. It is approximately 30 miles north to Des Moines. Ames, Iowa metropolitan statistical area is defined as encompassing all of Story County. This, along with Boone, Iowa micropolitan statistical area, makes up the larger Ames-Boone combined statistical area.The city population at the 2010 census was 58,965.
The city is the home of Iowa State University of Science and Technology (ISU), a public research institution with leading Agriculture, Design, Engineering, and Veterinary Medicine colleges. State and Federal institutions are the largest employers in Ames, including the university, U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Animal Disease Center and the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory.
The city has a public library, an arts center and a large number of parks and arboretums spread throughout the town.
