Amherst is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Its population at the 2010 census was 11,201. The town center village, classified as a Census Designated Place (CDP), is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Amherst Village Historic District. Ponemah Bog Wildlife Sanctuary, Hodgman State Forest, the Joe English Reservation and Baboosic Lake, these are all located in Amherst.
The town was named for Lord General Jeffrey Amherst, who commanded British forces in North America during the French and Indian War. The town grew rapidly post World War II, due to an influx from surrounding towns as they became part of the greater Boston, Massachusetts region. Nature and heritage tourism are popular activities here. Points of interest include the Peadbody Mill Environmental Center, the Wigwam Museum, and the Chapel Museum. Apart from tourism, professional services and commercial activites incluing sales, production, transportation and material moving are significant here.
