Anaconda, county seat of Anaconda City/Deer Lodge County, is located in southwestern Montana, which is a mountainous region. Central Anaconda is 5,335 feet above sea level. Geographically, the region has densely timbered forestlands, lakes, mountains and recreation grounds. Its population at the 2000 census was 9,417.
The Atlantic Richfield Company which carried out large-scale smelting was shut down in 1980, and large scale cleanup efforts was put into place by the Environmental Protection Agency and executed with the assistance of ARCO. A golf club was established post-cleanup.
Hunting, fishing, skiing and other sports are popular here.
