The area was settled in the late eighteenth century, and incorporated in 1848 as a borough. Initially, it was named "Warren" but that was later changed. It has a total area of 0.3 square miles. 8.57% of the area is water, and the rest is land. Historically, the major player in the local economy was the Apollo Iron & Steel Company. The borough also got the first public library of the county, in 1911.
