Ashland is a town in and the county seat of Clay County, Alabama. It was incorporated in 1871, and named after the Kentucky estate home of the 19th century statesman Henry Clay. The city had a total area of 7.3 square miles. 7.2 square miles of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.41%) is water. It is situated at an elevation of 1,300 feet, making it the highest county seat in the state. The town is known as "The City of Friends".
The first graphite mine of the state was opened here. The cotton industry was also well established during the early twentieth century, but a boll weevil infestation destroyed it. The significant industries during this century includes timber, poultry, and cabinet making. The local airport is the Ashland/Lineville Airport.
