Ashtabula is a city in Ashtabula County, Ohio. It is the functional center of the Ashtabula Metro Area, and has a total area of 7.7 square miles. 2.20% of the area is water, and the rest is land. The name comes from a Native American language, and means "river of many fish". The city was founded in 1803. It was then incorporated in 1891. The city borders Lake Eire, and the Ashtabula River has an important port here.

The Ashtabula Lift bridge, built in 1925, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city is now known for a major coal port on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Ashtabula River. This is to the north of Cleveland. During the early twentieth century, chemical industry and increasing harbor activity caused growth of the city. The harbour hosts an annual Blessing of the Fleet community festival. Walnut Beach and Walnut Boulevard are local attractions. Downtown Ashtabula has shopping and dining options. Tourism is also an activity here. Public schooling is administered by the Ashtabula Area School District. Higher education is offered by the Kent State University at Ashtabula. Ashtabula County Airport is the local airport. The closest hospital is Ashtabula County Medical Center on Lake Avenue. The cost of living here is 15.30% lower than the country average.
