Athens-Clarke County is a consolidated city–county in the state of Georgia, in the northeastern part of the state. It comprises the former City of Athens proper (the county seat) and Clarke County. The consolidated city-county's population was 115,452 as per the 2010 census. It is part of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Independent publisher Hill Street Press is headquartered here. A number of authors are current or former residents of the city. Every spring there are bicycle races collectively known as the Twilight Series. Culture coexists with the University of Georgia (located in Athens) students in creating an art scene, music scene and intellectual environment. The city has music venues, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops that cater to its creative climate. Athens has a vibrant culture of music with many popular bands originating from this area. It also has a number of newspapers, television stations and FM radio stations.
