Athol is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. Its population at the 2010 census was 11,584.
Post-Civil War, the town has primarily developed as an industrial area. The L. S. Starrett Company is the largest employer in town, followed by the Athol Memorial Hospital. Downsizing has adversely affected the commerce of Athol. Most of the remaining jobs in Athol are in the retail and food service industries.
Current groups working on Athol's economy include the Economic Development and Industrial Corporation, a quasi-public entity, and the North Quabbin Chamber of Commerce, located on Main Street in Athol.
The town has one local daily newspaper, and three radio stations. The town is known for producing a number of talented musicians across many genres. Eco-tourism is also being promoted in the region. Hiking, fishing and sports are popular activities.
