Brief Information About Atlantic City

Atlantic City is a city in Atlantic County, New Jersey. The city is globally renowned resort city for gambling, conventions and leisure. The city also served as the inspiration for the American version of the board game Monopoly. Its population at the 2010 census was 39,558. It is part of the Atlantic City–Hammonton metropolitan statistical area.

One can enter the city via three possible routes- the Black Horse Pike/Harding Highway (US 322/40), White Horse Pike (US 30) and the Atlantic City Expressway.
New Jersey voters in 1976 approved casino gambling for Atlantic City, after a 1974 referendum on legalized gambling failed to pass. The Resorts International was the first legal casino in the eastern United States when it opened on May 26, 1978.  The Borgata, the latest casino in Atlantic City, opened in July 2003, and its success brought an influx of developers to the city with plans on building grand Las Vegas style mega casinos to revitalize the it. The recession had hit the plans of developing and opening many new casinos. January 2011 saw the governor Chris Christie announcing the Atlantic City Tourism District, a state-run district encompassing the boardwalk casinos, the marina casinos, the Atlantic City Outlets, and Bader Field. This district would include heavier police presence, as well as beautification and infrastructure improvements.

Some of the popular casinos in the city include ACH Casino Resort, Bally's Atlantic City, Caeser's Atlantic City, Golden Nugget Atlantic City, Trump Plaza, Trump Taj Mahal and many more. Atlantic City is considered the "Gambling Capital of the East Coast" and is second only to Las Vegas in number of casinos, yearly gaming revenue, and number of rooms.

The Atlantic City Boardwalk has the distinction of being one of the first boardwalks of its type in the United States, having opened on June 26, 1870. Some popular shopping destinations include The Quarter at Tropicana, Shore Mall, Hamilton Mall, Smithville Towne Center, and many more. Another attraction here is the Absecon Light, a coastal lighthouse located in the north end of Atlantic City overlooking Absecon Inlet. It is the tallest lighthouse in the state of New Jersey and is the third tallest masonry lighthouse in the United States. While the light still shines, it is no longer used as a navigational aid. Air travel is via  Atlantic City International Airport, located 9 miles northwest of the city in Egg Harbor Township.
