Auburn is a city in Lee County, Alabama. It is a main city of the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Area. It is the largest city is eastern Alabama, with a 2010 population of 53,380. It is the fastest growing city in the state, and one of the fastest growing cities in the country. It was incorporated in 1839. The city has a total area of 39.6 square miles. 39.1 square miles of it is land and 0.4 square miles of it (1.11%) is water.
It is essentially a college town, being home to Auburn University. The university was first established as a college with a land grant, in 1887. In 1892, it became the first four-year college in the state to admit women. From 1980 to 2003, Auburn's population grew by 65%, and the local economy expanded by 220%.
The largest employer in the city is the university and its affiliated services, with one fourth of the workforce in the city is employed in that sector. Federal and state governments are significant employers as well, and these jobs are also usually related to the university. The city also has four industrial parks, which focus on the manufacture of small engines, automotive wheels, fuel cells, plastic injection technology, and vehicle armor. The uburn University Research Park is currently under construction.
The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is located here. It houses a collection of primarily 19th and 20th century American and European art. Other recreational options include the Telfair Peet Theatre, which performs a series of plays and musicals every year. The city also has dance schools, 16 parks, trails for biking and trekking, as well as a number of lakes.
The city gets about 55 inches of rain annually, with about 110 days having measurable precipitation.
