Baker City is a city in and the county seat of Baker County, Oregon. Named after English-born American politician Edward D. Baker, the city was established in 1866. It was incorporated in 1874. The "city" word was dropped in 1911, but added again in 1980s. It has a total area of 6.9 square miles, all of which is land. The city is nestled in a valley surrounded by the Wallowa Mountains, the Elkhorn Mountains and part of the Blue Mountains.

Tourism is an important commercial activity here. A number of annual festivals are held here, including the Miners' Jubilee. Baker Historic District, Crossroads Art Center, National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, Oregon Trail Regional Museum and Eltrym Historic Theater are some of the other points of interest. The Elkhorn Classic bicycle race is also based here. Forest headquarters of the Wallowa–Whitman National Forest are also close to the city. Baker School District 5J administers public schooling here, comprising Baker High School and Baker Middle School. The local airport is the Baker City Municipal Airport. The local hospital is the St. Alphonsus Medical Center, on Pocahontas Road. The cost of living here 7.00% lower than the country average.
