Big Sky is a census-designated place (CDP) in Gallatin and Madison counties in the southwestern part of the state of Montana. It is about midway between West Yellowstone and Bozeman on U.S. Route 191. It is at a distance of 15 miles from the northwestern border of the Yellowstone National Park. Its population at the 2007 census was 2,421.
The main contributor to the local economy is tourism. It has two large ski resorts that are sited in the "Mountain" sector: Big Sky Ski and Summer Resort and Moonlight Basin. The other part of Big Sky lies in the Gallatin Canyon, along the Gallatin River, popular amongst white water rafters and kayakers. Other activities here include hiking and fly-fishing. The local businesses are located mainly in three commerce sites, Meadow Village Shopping Center, the Canyon, and The Big Sky Town Center.
The population predominantly comprises White Americans. A small percentage of the population comprises people of Hispanic origin.
