Famous for its Home rule Municipality, Cortez is the County seat of Montezuma County in the U.S. State of Colorado. Cortez is named after the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez. With a total area of about 14.5 sq. kms., the city is located at an elevated height of about 6190 ft. above the ground level. There are a number of places and historical buildings in the city which are a part of the National Register of Historical places. They are of huge interest to visitors of the city, and help in the growth of the local tourism sector. This further boosts the gowth of other services like retail, banking etc. Matters relating to education are looked after Cortez-Montezuma School District. Among the transportation facilities, there is a municipal airport at Cortez.
