Fort Payne is a city in and the county seat of DeKalb County, Alabama. This was initially a Native American village. It was settled by the 1860s, and incorporated in 1889. It had an initial boom due to iron and coal deposits discovered here, which petered out. The city now claims to be the "Official Sock Capital of the World." By the beginning of the 21st century, more than half the socks of the country were manufactured here.
It has a total area of 56.0 square miles, most of which is land. The city is within a narrow valley on Big Wills Creek in the Cumberland Plateau region.
Manufacturing, construction and retail trade are the major commercial activities here. Public schooling is administered by the Fort Payne City Schools system, comprising two elementary, one middle and one high school. The closest hospital is the local DeKalb Regional Medical Center, on Med Center Drive. Isbell Field is the local municipal airport. The cost of living here is 15.60% than the country average, making living here significantly cheaper.
