Greenville is a village and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Smithfield. The town is part of Providence County, which in turn is part of the Providence-New Bedford-Fall River Metro Area. West Greenville and Spragueville, as well as the Mountaindale reservoir and beach are all included within the CDP. It has a total area of 5.8 square miles. 5.2 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. The village was established in the seventeenth century, and was named after Revolutionary War General, Nathanael Greene, who was born in the state in 1742.
