Pelican is a city located in the U.S. state of Alaska. It lies in the northwestern part of Chichagof Island in Hoonah-Angoon Census Area. Pelican was instituted as a salmon cannery town back in the late 1930s, and it still proudly promoting the slogan given back then: “Closest to the fish!” It has a mixture of commercial fishing industry and tourism. The city-owned hydro-electric utility is a rarity for a rural community which mostly relies on diesel-powered generation. As of the 2010 census, the population of Pelican was 88, down from 163 at the 2000 census. The city has a total area of 0.73 square miles at 57°57′30″N 136°13′27″W. The elevation is 217 feet.
