Birmingham has one or more community and civic organizations. A community is a group of people who live close to each other, and often have the same civic concerns about the area. Thus, such organizations are created, set up and run by the residents of the community. The group is formed to look after larger self-interests. These can be either local in origin, or they can be chapters of a national organization. There are many training and support organizations for national coalitions now, which are independently governed at the local level. Some examples include ACORN, PICO National Network, Direct Action and Research Training Center etc. These help bring in extra resources, and regularize the working of such organizations. A civic organization, somewhat similarly, is a formalized grouping of volunteers who help improve the neighborhood. They can have a variety of specific causes that they focus on. One or more such organizations may be present here, such as one for strays, scouts, cultivation of fine arts, cleanliness watch, and so on. The idea is to give a voice to the community, so that they can influence and direct local leaders to solve their problems and further their causes.
