Print Edition Opt-Out Process

Stop The Delivery Of Your Printed Yellow Pages Book By Opting Out.
As the original opt-out registry, our mission continues by supporting the interest in an official opt-in registry for printed distribution. Our PaperlessPetition.org is what fueled public awareness to the idea of an opt-out registry.

Why we support the “Green Movement”

YellowPagesDirectory.com is a Yellow Pages company working to educate consumers and promote the green movement to eliminate the unsolicited delivery of Yellow and White Pages books.

How The Movement Began

YellowPagesDirectory.com opt-out page was started because consumers are continually bombarded with Yellow and White Page directories at both their home and offices. At the time, over 500 million of these directories were printed every year; that is nearly two books for every person in the country. These directories were producing a staggering amount of waste, not only in terms of misused natural resources but also in filling of valuable landfill space.

To produce 500 million books:

  • - 19 million trees were needed to be harvested
  • - 1.6 billion pounds of paper were wasted
  • - 7.2 million barrels of oil were misspent in their processing (not including wasted gas for their delivery)
  • - 268,000 cubic yards of landfill were taken up
  • - 3.2 billion kilowatts of energy were squandered

The cost associated with the delivery and disposal of these books remains exorbitant, however, print books have declined over the years. Unfortunately, unsolicited costs fall heavily on consumers. Why are we paying for something that was delivered to our homes and offices that we did not ask for?

How We Changed

After years of a combined effort between Paperless Petition and Yellow Pages Goes Green, both of which were acquired by Yellow Pages Directory Inc., a business registered in the State of New York. The Yellow Pages Association created their own opt-out registry; however, Paperless Petition and Yellow Pages Goes Green were the first to demand they begin respecting opt-out requests. While continuing to promote awareness and helping consumers easily opt-out of printed White and Yellow Pages delivery, today we’ve created our own simple, cost effective, online alternative to print.

Survey Says

According to banthephonebook.org, consumers overwhelmingly support an 'Opt-in' Program. This online survey asked participants if they would support an "opt-in" program (only receive a Yellow Pages or White Pages phone book if they requested one) and if they believe it would have a positive impact on the environment and save taxpayers millions of dollars each year, 81% of survey respondents said 'Yes'. In our our own polls users are asked which version of the Yellow Pages they use most? 64% percent of users choose "Online" Yellow Pages.

The YellowPagesDirectory.com contains roughly 27.5 million Yellow Page business listings while including 250 million White Page listings. There is simply no further reason to litter our planet with paper telephone directories and we will continue our mission to advocate that, until print books are universally accepted as obsolete.

"YellowPagesDirectory.com isn't against the telephone books themselves, but the unwanted delivery of five pounds of paper to people's doorsteps. We believe that you shouldn't have to bear the cost of recycling something you didn't ask for in the first place. If we want a phone book, we'll ask for one..". - Michael Keegan, CEO
