This is done either online, or the merchant or retailer. The couple can select certain items from the store to make the list, which is filed with the merchant. This list is now made available to the guests. When a listed item is purchased by a guest, the registry is updated. This prevents unnecessary duplication of gifts, and enables couples to select things they need.
