One or more farms and ranches are present in Madison. These are areas of land devoted to agriculture, grazing for livestock and related occupations. Major crops include corn, soybean, hay, cotton, rice and wheat. The work is usually accomplished by usage of machinery, or by manual labour. Migrant labour forms the major workforce at farms. Seeds, pesticides, fertilizers, irrigation and other special factors may be needed for agriculture. Ranches have grazing lands for livestock such as cattle or sheep. These are raised for their meat or wool. Less common animals raised at ranches include elk, American bison or even ostrich, emu, and alpacas.
