Alice is a city in and the county seat of Jim Wells County, Texas. It is the principal city of the Alice Metro Area, and has a total area of 12.3 square miles. 11.9 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. The city was established in 1888, and named after Alice Gertrudis King Kleberg, the daughter of Richard King. The latter established the King Ranch. Historically, the city has been known for its agricultural products, as well as a small petroleum industry. The city is also recognized as "The Birthplace of Tejano".

The major industry here presently is the drilling industry. The city is also known as the "Hub City" due its strategic location between the cities of Corpus Christi, McAllen, Laredo and San Antonio. The major employers here are Schlumberger, Halliburton, BJ Services Company, Weatherford International, and the Grey Wolf Drilling Company. There are a number of public and private schools in the area. Alice International Airport is the local airport. The local hospital is Chistus Spohn Hospital, on Main Street. The cost of living here 21.10% lower than the country average.
