Aquinnah is a town located on the island of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. Prior to 1998, its name was Gay Head. The area is known for its great natural beauty, including the distinctive clay cliffs, as well as the sizeable Native American population. In recent times, it has become popular as a center of Wampanoag culture and a center of pride and tradition among members of the tribe, who make up about one-third of the town's voters. Whaling was a significant historic activity. Tourism is popular now, and the natural beauty is well protected with local participation. Its population at the 2010 census was 311.
According to the 2000 census, approximately 37% of the population comprises Native Americans.
