A city in the Los Angeles County of California in the US, Artesia is one of the Gateway Cities of the County. It got incorporated in May of 1959. It had many flowing 'artesian' wells in the area and was fertile pastoral land for farming and agriculture. The city derives its name from the word 'artesian'. Artesia covers an approximate area of 4.1 km2, all of which is land. The 2010 US Census reported Artesia's population at 16,522 with a density of 10,194.7 /square mile. It reported a racial makeup comprising of 21% White, 3.6% Afro-Americans, 0.6% Native Americans, 37% Asians, 0.2% Pacific Islanders and 15% of other races.In the 1920s and 30s it was one of the most important dairy districts of Southern California.Today it is essentially a cultural shopping district with many Indian-owned stores and restaurants.
