The town falls within the Greensboro-High Point Metro Area. The terrain is hilly. The city is the geographical center of the state.

Caraway Speedway and North Carolina Zoo are both located here. Asheboro City Schools administers public schooling here, comprising five elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school and one alternative learning program. Manufacturing, construction and retail trade are the major economic activities here. The closest hospital is the local Randolph Hospital, on White Oak Street.
