Beaufort is a city in and the county sea of Beaufort County, South Carolina. It is part of the Hilton Head Island-Beaufort Metro Area, and is considered a "lowcountry" city, and one of the oldest cities in the state, second only to Charleston. Beaufort is located on Port Royal Island, and has a total area of 23.4 square miles. 18.6 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. It is a scenic town popular for its historic architecture, and attracts a large number of visitors. The city was established in early eighteenth century by the British.
Tourism is the major commercial activity here. Hospitality and retail trade are allied sectors. The town is known for its scenic beauty as well as the well preserved antebellum architecture, most notably in the Historic District. The military presence in and around the area also provides employment, as does agriculture and aquaculture. Uptown Beaufort and Beaufort Town Center are the commercial, non-residential areas of the town. The city also celebrates a number of annual festivals. There are a number of public and private schools in the area. University of South Carolina Beaufort, Technical College of the Lowcountry and Clemson University have campuses in the city. Beaufort County Airport is the local airport, and the city is also well-connected by roads and railroads. A number of sites in the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cost of living here is 2.80% higher than the country average.
