Block Island is located in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 13 miles (21 km) south of the coast of Rhode Island. It is considered to be a part of the state. It is part of the Outer Lands region. Its land area is 9.73 square miles. Classified by The Nature Conservancy as one of "The Last Great Places", Block Island is a popular summer tourist destination. Initially a Native American settlement, European settlers arrived in the sixteenth century.
The island is known for activities such as bicycling, hiking, sailing, fishing, and the beaches. Block Island North Light, on the northern tip of the island, and Block Island Southeast Light, on the southeast side of the island are two famous and historicaly significant lighthouses presnent on the island. Popular events here include the Block Island Race Week, and the Fourth of July celebrations. The Old Harbor Historic District was declared a National Register historic district some decades earlier.
Tourism is the major economic activity here. Transportation options include a regular ferry to St. Judith, and summer connections to New London, Connecticut; Montauk, New York; and Newport, Rhode Island. Block Island State Airport is the general aviation airport, that has flights from Westerly, Rhode Island.
