Cardiff is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama. It is named after the capital of Wales, and is one of the four cities in Alabama that are named after cities in Great Britain. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metro Area. The town has a total area of 0.2 square miles, all of which is land. The town is situated in the Cumberland Plateau that has shallow but deeply incised stream valleys that dissect the rocky terrain. The area has significant deposits of bituminous coal. This was initially developed as a coal mining town, and the decline in its economy paralleled the decline in the coal mining industry.

Manufacturing, retail trade and transportation and warehousing are the main industries now. The closest hospital is the Medical West (an affiliate of the UAB health system), located about 7 miles away in Bessemer. Cardiff's cost of living is 12.50% lower than the country average, making living here comparatively cheaper.
