Centre is a city in and the county seat of Cherokee County, Alabama. It is part of the Gadsden, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was settled in 1936, and named as it is centrally located in the county, which in turn is named after the Native Americans (Cherokee Indians) who were the primary settlers in the area. It has a total area of 11.1 square miles. 11.0 square miles of it is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
Cherokee County High School, Cherokee County Career and Technology Center, Centre Middle School, and Centre Elementary School are the public schools that are run by the Cherokee County Board of Education. Manufacturing, construction, health care, social assistance and educational services are the most important contributors to the local economy. The closest hospital is the Gadsden Regional Medical Center, located about 19 miles away at Gadsden. Centre's cost of living is 12.00% lower than the country average, making living here comparatively cheaper.
