Emergency Medical Services are provided as out-of-hospital acute medical care. It also includes transport to a specialized care for more serious cases. EMS offered in Chicago are regulated at the most basic level by federal laws. The federal laws set minimum standards for carrying out these services, while individual state governments have laws as well, which are usually for a higher standard than the federal minimum. EMS is provided by volunteers, paramedics, doctors, surgeons and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
