Clanton is a city in and the couty seat of Chilton County, Alabama. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover–Cullman Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1868, and incorporated in 1873. It was named after General James H. Clanton, a brigadier in the Confederate States Army. It has a total area of 20.4 square miles. 20.3 square miles of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.15%) is water.
Agriculture, especially cultivation of peach, is important here. Over 80% of the state peach production happens in Clanton. The city hosts the annual Chilton County Peach Festival, and has been doing the same since 1952. Other economic activities include manufacturing, retail trade and construction activities. Public education is administerd by the Chilton County School System, which comprises two high schools, one middle school, and two elementary schools. Clanton's cost of living is 14.80% lower than the country average, making living here comparatively cheaper.
